Auschwitz - Concentration Camp

Nina was very aware of the world around her, and had some items on her list not indicative of her age. Do you have a list of places that you would like to visit not because of how wonderful they are, but because something quite the opposite occurred there?

Last month I spent a few days in Munich. From the time we planned the trip, I thought about visiting Dachau, but I kept telling myself that I would only make myself unhappy without learning anything new. When we got to Munich, however, I decided to go, and was glad I did so. Nothing substitutes for actually being in a place.

Less than a month later, I visited Nina’s list for the first time. Her wish to make herself visit a concentration camp was right at the top of the web site. I am now doubly glad that I went.

When we lived in Germany, we visited 2 concentration camps — Buchenwald and Bergen Belsen. We took our time, read all the exhibits and wandered around the grounds. Many of the buildings were destroyed, but both were amazing memorials to those who were imprisoned there. We cried a lot but felt we needed to see them. We are very glad we did.
