My wife and I were lucky enough to go on a gondola ride in Venice this very June on our honeymoon. I can tell you that it is very romantic and shows a side of Venice that can’t be attained from the walkways. It does also come with the caveat that they aren’t very big person friendly. As a six foot five inch man, I found it hard to balance and was a little sketched out by the extreme tilting of the boat.

Regardless, it is a wonderful time. Slowly floating through the back waterways is quite calming. Bursting out onto the main waterway right in front of the famous Rialto Bridge (the largest bridge in Venice) is astonishing! As we passed under the bridge itself, we kissed! It is said to be good luck to kiss the one you love as you pass under the bridge.

Our gondolier was magnificent as well. He was a doppelganger for Jersey Shore’s “The Situation” and was a perfect tour guide to boot. He pointed out and explained historical landmarks along our path and hummed a couple pretty tunes as well to set the mood.

A wonderful thirty minutes around inner Venice was a memory I will cherish forever.
