Petra is mildly reminiscent of the sandstone found in southern Utah. If you enter Petra through the formal gates, you take a winding 3/4 mile walk down a sandstone passage called a siq. At the end of the passage, you round a corner and the iconic Treasury is looming in front of you. If you walk a little further, the area opens up into a vast expanse of tombs, buildings, gypsy vendors and a coliseum. If you have the motivation to walk up 850 sandstone steps, you will be treated to a view of the valley and The Monastery, another iconic carving that brings history to life in front of your eyes!
