I learned to drive in a car with a standard transmission. I still remember one outing with my father. We were at a busy 5 way intersection and I kept stalling the car every time I tried to let out the clutch. Other drivers were honking at me, but my father stayed so calm and gave me lots of encouragement until I finally made it through the intersection.

I, too, learned to drive on stick shift. My parents took me to a mall parking lot on Sundays (in the days when the malls were not open) and we drove around- I did pass the test! Then years and years later I had to teach my husband-we were driving down a main road when he held up the round lever with the gear markings and said “what do I do with this?” leaving the literal stick coming up from the floor- my heart pounded and I said “just pull into the next parking lot”…I don’t think he has driven a stick shift since!
